How to Feel Natural in Your Wedding Portraits: A 2026 Guide

## Forget the Posing: Why Less is More for Your Wedding Portraits. One of the questions I hear most often when meeting couples at my Shropshire studio is, 'Rob, what do we do with our hands?' It is a completely fair question. For many, standing in front of a camera feels like being under a microscope. But as we head into the 2026 and 2027 wedding seasons, I want to reassure you: the best photographs aren't 'posed' at all. They are found. When I document a wedding, my goal is to remain as invisible as possible. I don’t want you to feel like you’re performing for a camera; I want you to feel like you’re taking a moment to breathe with your new spouse. If you are worried about feeling awkward, here is how we make it effortless. ## The Magic of the 'Walk and Talk'. The biggest mistake couples make is thinking they need to strike a pose. Instead, I usually suggest we just go for a walk. When we head out into the golden hour—that beautiful, soft light that defines the Shropshire countryside—the camera becomes secondary. If you are focused on walking, holding hands, or telling your partner a funny story about the ceremony, your bodies naturally find comfortable, authentic positions. You aren't 'posing' because you’re actually doing something. This movement brings a life and fluidity to your images that stiff, choreographed shots just can't replicate. ## Forget the Camera, Remember the Day. Your wedding day isn't a photoshoot; it’s a marriage. When we step away for your portraits, I treat it as a quiet interlude. I want you to forget I am there. Often, I will hang back with a longer lens, giving you the space to exist in your own little bubble. If you aren't looking at me, you can’t worry about your smile or your posture. You’ll be looking at each other, and that is where the magic happens. The best portrait isn't one where you look into the lens; it's one where you look at your partner like they are the only person in the room. ## Embrace the Golden Hour. In 2026, we are seeing a shift back to raw, honest emotion in wedding photography. The lighting plays a huge part in this. If we can time your portraits for that final hour before sunset, the light does half the work for us. It softens everything, creates a warm glow, and makes the whole environment feel more intimate. When the light is soft, you feel more relaxed, and that translates directly into the photos. It’s not about finding the perfect 'spot'—it’s about finding the perfect light and letting you exist within it. ## Trust is the Secret Ingredient. Ultimately, the reason couples tell me they felt so relaxed is because they stopped trying to 'be' a wedding couple and just let themselves be a couple. We work together to find a rhythm that feels natural to you. Maybe you are quiet and reflective, or maybe you can’t stop laughing. My job isn't to change your dynamic; it’s to frame it. By the time we reach your wedding day, we will have spent time getting to know each other, so when I step into your space, it doesn't feel like a stranger pointing a lens at you. It feels like a friend catching a moment. If you are getting married in the Midlands or further afield in 2026 or 2027, remember: you don’t need to be a model. You just need to show up as yourself. That is more than enough.
